        Overview

The clock of the Citizens’ Advice Bureaux is being wound for the last time as the clock winder retires after forty-one years. He started in 1924 after taking over from his father who had wound the clock since 1907. 1938 saw the National Service of Social Services (today National Council of Voluntary Organisations) establish a group to advise the civilian population. The Citizens Advice Service was founded in 1939 but can be traced as far back as the Betterton Report of 1924.
