Naval Log of Victory
This morale-boosting report charts the struggles, setbacks and triumphs of the Allies’ war at sea, from defeat at Pearl Harbour, to victory at Midway and Guadalcanal.
Overview
Using a mixture of archive film, maps, diagrams, dramatic re-enactments, and genuine footage from naval engagements and battles, this issue tells the story of two dramatic years of war at sea from the attack on Pearl Harbour, to the Battle of Atlantic and the triumphs of Midway and Guadalcanal, which marked the end of Japan’s advance in the Pacific and turned the tide in the Allies’ favour.
Although the bulk of the footage in this issue consists of film of naval conflicts from Pearl Harbour to Guadalcanal - capturing both the excitement and the terror of the war at sea - the film ends by noting the most important factor of all: the increased industrial capacity of the allied shipyards. This unprecedented upswing in production in Great Britain and the USA enabled the allies to add to the fleet despite heavy losses, so that by 1944, with the addition of French Naval ships and the newly built fleet, the United Nations ships outnumbered the Axis navy by 45 to 14 battleships, 28 to 13 carriers and 1105 to 520 lighter units.
