Our Village

The residents of the Kent village of Speldhurst feature in this charming 1935 film, showing both everyday village life and that year’s Silver Jubilee celebrations.

Speldhurst's folks are seen in this film from 1935, featuring, unusually, a cross-section of the population. Apart from the local 'great and good' we also see the rubbish collector, an ice-cream vendor, the butcher, the grocer, the postman and the village bobby. There is even a glimpse of an early 'mobility-scooter' driven by a woman in furs. We next see Royal Tunbridge Wells decked out in Jubilee bunting before heading back to Speldhurst's own celebrations and a wedding.
