Inspector Lavardin

15 rating

Claude Chabrol’s slippery thriller sees the eponymous detective investigating a murder involving a former lover.

When prominent Catholic writer Raoul Mons is found murdered on a beach with the word ‘PIG’ scrawled on his body, Inspector Lavardin (Jean Poiret) travels to the Breton coast to investigate. But the case turns personal when he discovers that the victim’s widow, Hélène, is his former lover.

After the success of Cop au vin (1985), Chabrol was inspired to follow up with a sequel, bringing Poiret back to reprise the role of the morally ambiguous Lavardin. A mix of rural murder-mystery and série noire brutality, his whodunit untangles the web of hypocrisy lurking beneath the surface of the respectable coastal community.
