A father invites his estranged teenage son to live with him for a year on a remote Nordic island in this Sundance-nominated survival drama.
Teenager Roy (BAFTA nominee Woody Norman) has barely seen his French father Tom (Swann Arlaud, Anatomy of a Fall) since his parents’ divorce, so when he is invited to spend a year with him at a remote lakeside cabin in the Norwegian fjords, he is cautiously excited. However, as refreshing summer shifts to a brutal Nordic winter, the novelty of island life wears off and survival mode kicks in.
Based on David Vann’s autobiographical novella, adapted by writer-director Vladimir de Fontenay and rendered in a palette of icy blue, the film is as much a survival thriller as a deeply moving family drama, with a gut-punching ending.
