The Doll

Widescreen adaptation of Bolesław Prus’s 1870s-set novel about a man who cannot escape his class straitjacket.

Has’ first colour feature was this lavish adaptation of Bołeslaw Prus’s novel. Former brewery clerk Stanisław Wokulski returns to Warsaw in late 1870s, after a prolonged exile in Siberia. His highly successful business activities are primarily aimed at wooing Izabela, the daughter of a bankrupt aristocrat. But despite Stanisław’s wealth, he will always be a member of the ‘wrong’ social class.
