Nushu is a century-old secret script, shared amongst Chinese women so they could communicate with each other, offering hope and community at a time when they were forbidden to read or write. Independent millennials Hu Xin and Simu have learned the art of Nushu, aiming to continue the practice of a significant art in women’s emancipation. In their captivating debut documentary feature, Violet Du Feng and Zhao Qing highlight pivotal moments in Hu Xin and Simu’s lives, navigating their professional and personal existence, and behind the appearance of independence, the daily struggle for equality. The directors’ empathetic approach created a safe space for Hu Xin and Simu to talk frankly about their feelings, desires and the external pressures they face.
