Overview
A cine club group of ramblers embark on a round and about springtime walk from Reeth. Continuing past farmland, dry stonewalls and through woodland they reach the Swale where they encounter energetic fell runners crossing the river. Traversing stiles and shallow streams, the walkers pass stunning panoramic views of hills and dales. They rest for lunch before crossing a swing bridge and returning to Reeth.
This hike with fellow Darlington Video & Filmmakers club members was filmed by Derek Mathieson. He began shooting film at the age of 11 using a clockwork 8mm Kodak Brownie camera. Leaving school aged 15, he worked at the Inverness Empire Theatre, learning the craft of theatre production, including lighting design, and abandoned filmmaking for several years. He joined Darlington Cine Club in 1977 after attending a talk at the club by the South Shields animator Sheila Graber. He shot his first amateur documentary on the Lily Laundry in Darlington, built in 1912, where he then worked as an accountant and company secretary. He has since made over 70 documentary and home movies, moving to video production in 1992.
