Zandra Rhodes

Early 1980s portrait of fashion designer Zandra Rhodes, by fellow avant-garde creator, Peter Greenaway.

Government sponsored film 1981 15 mins

Overview

Part fly-on-the-wall observational documentary, part knowing-self-portrait and part fashion-shoot, Greenaway’s portrait of Zandra Rhodes is as vibrant and creative as her own designs. Rhodes allows Greenaway to film a champagne party at her home with celebrity friends, as well as a visit to the hairdresser to have her hair dyed signature pink.

We see Rhodes working in every area of her business: selecting items from her personal archive for an exhibition, demonstrating how her work should be shown on the catwalk, screen printing her own fabric and conferring with staff and collaborators. This COI-commission short is a fascinating vignette of a driven, focused fashion guru made by a driven, focused creative filmmaker.
