The Box is a major cultural and heritage attraction and archive, which opened in Plymouth’s city centre in September 2020. Its collection, formally the South West Film and Television Archive (SWFTA), is the regional film archive for the South West of England, comprising the combined programme libraries of Westward Television and Television South West (TSW). It also includes a significant number of donated film collections dating back to the early 1890s.

This film shows the latest Singer sewing machines on a production line at the Clark’s factory in Yeovil. The year is 1975 and marks the 150th Anniversary of the the founding of the company by Quaker brothers James and Cyrus Clark.
In the 1950s and 1960s Clarks expanded in the South West before moving its factory operations abroad in the 1970s and 1980s. The Company is still based in Street, Somerset and the last shoe made in the UK was produced in 2006.
