Works and Workers of Denton Holme

Denton Holme's Edwardian workforce comes alive at the sight of the new-fangled film camera.

Non-Fiction 1910 4 mins Silent

Overview

Edwardian workers in Denton Holme, a once heavily-industrial area of Carlisle, Cumbria, come alive at shift's end. Flocking from the factory gates, the excited crowd - including several youngsters - makes a bee-line for the waiting film camera. It's charming to watch their animated reactions to the new-fangled technology.

Denton Holme is now a largely residential district of Carlisle, but was one characterised by textile mills and engineering works. This fascinating 'factory gate' film is very much in the vein of those made by Mitchell and Kenyon in northern mill-towns a few years earlier.
