Overview
It is 1936 and the fiftieth anniversary of the Walsall Co-operative Society. Since 1886 its income has grown from Ј500 to over a million. That achievement is celebrated with a parade that shows that the society was still relying heavily horse transport. As is often the way rain spoils the day but the parade is re-run the following week. 'The foundation of world peace is co-operation', one float declares; an attitude that would be greatly tested in a few short years.
