Overview

The colliery at Leycett in Staffordshire closed in the late 1950s causing a mass exodus of workers and the eventual demolition of the village itself. At its height nearly four hundred people lived in Leycett but by 1972 the village school was all that remained of the community. The final death knell of the village came at the end of the 1972 summer term when the teachers said their goodbyes to the last 18 pupils. Greg Barnes sees the children on their way.
