University of London

A capital travelogue promo, painting a charmingly quaint picture of university and city

Documentary 1963 21 mins

Overview

"Would I like London?" So asks our amiable Aussie narrator - actually a young Andrew Sachs doing one of his accents - looking back on three years as an overseas student. Touring the capital, the colleges making up the university and the many facets of college life, this travelogue is quant, charming and soothing.

Nowadays every university hosts a glossy student promo film somewhere on its website. In 1963, film was a more innovative student recruitment tool. This piece was in fact sponsored not by the University itself but by the UK government's Colonial Office for Commonwealth distribution. It paints a strikingly square picture of student life amid a conspicuously un-swinging London.
