Turn Out of the Leeds Fire Brigade (1901)

Scenes in Leeds city centre as Edwardian firemen roll through on drill.

Non-Fiction 1901 2 mins Silent

Overview

For all its silence, this film is weirdly evocative of the sounds of the Edwardian street: the thundering of iron-shod hooves on cobbled streets, the clanging of fire engines' bells, the shouts and laughs of the crowd. The shot of firemen assembling for a photograph is a real highlight: their merry tomfoolery is a world apart from the austere still portraits we're used to seeing.
