Overview

Colourful images fill the screen in this amateur film that captures part of the Queen's official birthday celebrations in 1965. Shot from the stands at Horse Guards Parade, there are typically vibrant scenes as the Household Cavalry inspect the Foot Guards. The Queen, however, is nowhere to be seen. Who is the lady in the bowler hat riding side-saddle on the Queen's mount?

The Trooping the Colour ceremony is steeped in history. Once used as a means for troops to familiarise themselves with regimental colours, or flags, the parade has marked the official birthday of the British sovereign since 1748. It is now held annually on a Saturday in June on Horse Guards Parade. The Queen has attended every year except 1955 due to a rail strike. Until 1987, she attended the event on horseback. Given her absence in this film, it perhaps captures one of the two dress rehearsals that precede the main event, the Major General's Review and the Colonel's Review. This film is from the collection of Harrow Local History Library, a member of the London's Screen Archives Network.
