Their Happy New Year

Portsmouth sailors get some seasonal shore leave

Non-Fiction 1929 1 mins

Overview

Smiling sailors are lined up, inspected and released from the barracks in Queen St Portsmouth. The sailors' hat bands say HMS Victory - not Nelson's famous ship but a shore establishment for men posted into Portsmouth for training or other reasons. Every man in the RN had to be assigned to a vessel due to discipline regulations. In view are the old gates, the cathedral and the Royal Naval Arms.
