Race for the Viceroy's Cup
The annual horse race at Calcutta (Kolkata) - an important fixture in the social calendar
Overview
The Viceroy's Cup was an annual horse race held in Calcutta (Kolkata) and a key fixture in the social calendar for British India's elite. The race itself takes up relatively little screen time here: for the cameraman - and us - the real subject of interest lies in the off-guard images of high society, and the sometimes awkward (non-) mixing of British and Indian elites.
The race winner in 1931 was Star of Italy, and the trophy was presented by Lord Willingdon, newly-invested Viceroy of India.
