Queen Victoria's Funeral - Prestwich

Pomp and circumstance: crucial glimpses of the monarch’s funeral, the media event of its age

Non-Fiction 1901 3 mins Silent

Overview

Three precious minutes surviving from among the miles of footage shot by filmmakers at Queen Victoria’s funeral which, like her Diamond Jubilee four years earlier, was a major event for the early British film industry. At approx. 00:46 we see Lord Roberts, triumphant Commander-in-Chief of the British Forces in the Boer War (and only recently returned from South Africa), haughtily bestride the scene. At approx. 02:18, Victoria’s coffin enters the frame.
