        Nuclear Cathedral

Take a trip inside the eerie labyrinth taking shape on Anglesey: Wylfa nuclear power station.

        Overview

Take a trip inside the eerie labyrinth that’s taken shape on Anglesey: Wylfa nuclear power station. This unique behind-the-scenes ‘day in the life’ documentary was filmed four years after construction commenced and four years before Wylfa’s first reactor became fully operational. Wylfa eventually closed in December 2015.

This is a fascinating addition to the annals of documentary about workplaces, applying the age-old format of a study of the workingman’s day to a newly emerging British industry. The film was part of a Granada series called This England: less well-remembered nowadays than the same company’s World In Action, it reflected the same interest in a fresh interpretation of the contemporary world but in the form of general interest documentary rather than current affairs reportage. This edition of the programme was produced by Denis Mitchell, a giant of documentary TV, and directed by Gerard Dynevor, a TV and theatre actor and director whose varied CV included directing several episodes of Coronation Street.
