London's Strange New Mood

The general strike turns London life upside down

Non-Fiction 1926 3 mins Silent

Overview

It's day six of the general strike of 1926, and Londoners are feeling the effects - from sharing private transport to going without their usual reading matter. The newsreels tended to toe the Establishment line, and this light-hearted Topical Budget item stays away from the politics of the strike or the workers' demands in favour of jokey comments on the newspapers' diminished size. The two sides of the strike are only obliquely referred to, in the form of two new papers: the government-produced British Gazette and the Trades Union Congress' British Worker.
