Overview
The Duke of Edinburgh arrives at the Pool Road Recreation Ground, Newtown, by Royal Navy helicopter no. 718. He meets local boys engaged in athletics and camping who are participating in the newly-established Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. He is given a bit of meat cooked over an open fire but is fed in finer fashion at a reception, with harpists, at The Elephant and Castle Hotel.
Mute copy of a film probably shot by Charles Thacker, manager of the Pola Cinema, Welshpool, and Guy Baker, owner of a chain of cinemas that included the Pola and the Regent in Newtown. The Duke of Edinburgh, piloting the helicopter, was spending two days visiting centres in England and Wales involved with his Award scheme, Newtown being his first stop.
