        Overview

This amateur newsreel compilation is a fascinating record of events in two Tyneside cities, filmed over a year in 1933. The aftermath of a gas explosion in a Gateshead terrace is a melancholy scene. Spirits lift when the first all welded ship built on the Tyne is launched and keeps the famous Swan Hunter’s shipyard afloat in Wallsend during hard times, whilst model ship enthusiasts make waves at Paddy Freeman’s boating lake in Jesmond Dene.

Newcastle and District Amateur Cinematographers Association put together this eclectic documentary footage, with a staged Christmas finale ending the year with a festive hangover and a Newcastle invention, Andrews Liver Salts. One of the first British cine clubs, Newcastle ACA was formed in 1927 and still operates in the city today. The ship launch no doubt pleased a former Newcastle ACA president, Peter G Campbell, who was also on the board of Swan Hunters shipyard and gave his name to the small coaster. Given the north east’s shipbuilding heritage, it’s no surprise that model boating is deeply rooted in Tyne and Wear. The area still has three long established clubs, more than any other part of Britain.
