Dick Emery and dance troupe The Young Generation invite you to "simply pay through Giro" in this musical money promo.

Government sponsored film 1970 20 mins

Overview

Comedy legend Dick Emery is in fine form in this brilliantly bewildering 1970 musical-comedy-song-and-dance spectacular promoting National Girobank. Emery plays a gamut of great characters, including the immortal Mandy, in this fab and funny info oddity, featuring Dougie Squires' groovy Young Generation dance troupe singing and high-stepping all the way to "a simple, cheaper banking system".

The same year this film was made, The Young Generation rode the zeitgeist to become the first British dance group to get their own series on UK television. They followed it up with top billing on numerous television specials, including The Young Generation meet Shirley Bassey on the BBC in 1970. Two years later, Dick Emery would capitalise on his television stardom with the feature film Ooh... You Are Awful (1972). This government film is a public record, preserved and presented by the BFI National Archive on behalf of The National Archives, home to more than 1,000 years of British history.
