Landing at Villefranche from U.S. Cruiser "Olympia"

The SS Olympia disembarks its crew at Villefranche, near Nice on the French coast

Non-Fiction 1899 1 mins Silent

Overview

This panoramic view of Villefranche harbour shows Admiral Dewey's flagship 'Olympia' at anchor on his return voyage from the Philippines. This was one of several films that WKL Dickson took of the celebrated American Admiral Dewey not long after the Spanish-American War. The Olympia was engaged in the American victory at the Battle of Manila Bay.

The Olympia survives to this day - as the oldest surviving steel warship in the world - and is permanently moored at the Independent Seaport Museum in Philadelphia.
