Dubbed 'the fastest sport on two feet', lacrosse is a traditional Native American game adopted by French Jesuit missionaries in the 1630s and commonly played in British independent schools from the Victorian era. The first women's lacrosse game was held in 1890, at St Leonards School in Scotland. Men's and women's lacrosse were played under virtually the same rules, with no protective equipment, until the mid-1930s.
