Impatience for the arrival of summer can lead to many a clout being cast at the first glimpse of warmer weather. 1920s fashions offered several layers to peel, as seen in this charming newsreel item. But with May not yet out, those boaters would soon be back in mothballs and the cigarettes extinguished in the pool, as the Met Office's historical summary reports: "May, 1923: Mainly Cold and Dull".
