Overview

Ifan ab Owen Edwards – son of O M Edwards, Wales’ Chief Education Officer – inherited his father’s commitment to the Welsh language and culture, founding the youth movement Urdd Gobaith Cymru (the Welsh League of Hope) in 1922. The Urdd clubs, then as now, offered activities through the medium of Welsh, to foster the intellectual, physical and spiritual development of their members and to ensure that their lives were grounded in service to Wales, humanity and Christ.

Like his father, Ifan ab Owen Edwards was a crusader for the retention and development of the Welsh language and he saw the Urdd as a means of revitalising the nation. The youth of Wales would – via Welsh-language summer camps, sporting events, eisteddfods [cultural festivals], religious and social events – reinvigorate the language and culture and create a proud new nationalism. He also organised cruises for Welsh adults to travel and see the world in Welsh-speaking harmony.
