A close shave for Guisborough Grammar School Scouts at a cliff-top Runswick Bay campsite on the North Yorkshire coast.
A Guisborough Grammar School Scout troop scrub up well at a campsite with dramatic views over Runswick Bay. It’s a perfect day to head for a dip and game of leap frog in the chilly North Sea. These 1930s teenagers still wear sagging woollen tank suits typical of male swimwear until stars like Fred Perry popularised trunks and miracle fibres such as Lycra were introduced. But it was a while before the new fashions became affordable for all.
Guisborough Grammar School was originally founded in 1561 by Robert Pursglove, the last Prior of Gisborough Priory, as a free school for the sons of local farmers and tradesmen of Cleveland, a tradition that continued into the 20th century. In 1971 the school became Prior Pursglove College, a co-educational sixth form college.
