A study of tides, waves and sky on a Pembrokeshire beach
Artist filmmaker Chris Welsby "adopts a system of camera movements to chart the movement of tides, waves and sky" in this film shot on Wales' Pembrokeshire coast. Part two, shot at hightide at four pm, reverses the structure of part one. Welsby has explored the possibilities and parameters of landscape filmmaking for over 40 years, first shooting on 16mm, later working in HD and also making installations.
His films follow specific pre-determined structures which establish the parameters for the shape of the film whilst allowing chance elements to take their effect. Looking at his entire filmography, it is possible to discern an overarching project: the study of man's relationship to the natural environment; man sometimes presented as a destructive agent, the environment often as a force utterly beyond our control.
