Overview

Holidaying during the war seemed rather unpatriotic as it didn't particularly help the war effort. By August 1946, families with the means to do so set off for the coast, world peace had been restored and a new era was dawning. Women had found new freedoms and life would never been the same again even though many of their jobs were given over to the returning men.

The immediate post-war time was characterised by the demobilisation of military forces and families reunited. Many women had been employed during the war while men were off fighting the war. Working girls had a particular way of tying their hair up in a headscarf so that their rolls and waves didn't hamper the war effort and this remained a typical forties style. Rationing was still firmly in place and restoring homes, buying food and clothes remained a priority. The newly elected Labour Government nationalised companies including the travel company Thomas Cook and the Travel Association even marketed Britain in North America as a holiday destination in one attempt to revive a flailing post-war economy.
