Election - Bolsover
A testing assault course for any aspiring MP (well Conservative anyway): the safe Labour seat of Bolsover.
From the collection of:
Overview
The so called 'Beast of Bolsover', aka Dennis Skinner, was not taking his huge local following in the Derbyshire town for granted as campaigning for the 1983 General Election reached its final stages. Facing an uphill struggle to be heard is Conservative hopeful Sam Roberts (a merchant banker listing skiing as one of his hobbies) and Stuart Reddish for the Alliance. In truth, Skinner, surrounded by Labour supporters, is already home and dry.
The first interviewee is Guardian journalist Michael White. Unsurprsingly Dennis Skinner won the seat at the 1983 General Election but with a reduced majority, as predicted by Sam Roberts. Even so, Skinner continued to hold the seat into the 21st century.
