Dewar Story

Quirky promo with Gordon Jackson voicing a bottle of Scotch, as we see how it's made in Aberfeldy, Perthshire.

Documentary 1974 14 mins

Overview

"Why don't you try me? And give your wife some as well." So declares Gordon Jackson as the disembodied voice of a bottle of Scotch, star of this quirky promo. We hear the history of Dewars whisky and we see how it's made at Aberfeldy, Perthshire: the marriage of whiskies creating the blend, then maturation, dilution, bottling and packaging before heading out to both domestic and export markets. l

The bottle declares himself "a composite sort of character", the product of mixing malts and grains from all over Scotland (Aberfedly malt being the heart of the blend). At the time the film was made, single malts didn't have as much mainstream kudos as they enjoy now: blends were still synonymous with Scotch whisky for most people. The film itself is more blend than single malt... It's not one of those distilled masterpieces occasionally to be found in the annals of industrial filmmaking , but instead a decent mix of choice ingredients (the production processes are shot and edited well) with coarser ones (they're accompanied by awfully cheesy music!).
