Derbyshire Village
Bienvenue à Tideswell, a Derbyshire village in the Peak District that was given centre stage in this British Council promoted film, dubbed into French.
Overview
Dust off your school French and dig into this portrait of the “typical” Derbyshire village of Tideswell. Originally produced in English, this film was dubbed into other languages by the British Council to export a portrait of the country to the world. A 1947 review in the BFI’s Monthly Film Bulletin by the “Geography Viewing Committee” questioned the film’s value in the classroom because of its overemphasis on woodcarving, which was atypical of the region. However, the section on limestone quarrying which completes the film was praised.
