Charge of the Carabineers, Aldershot

A breathtaking cavalry charge

Non-Fiction 1898 Silent

Overview

The natural drama of cavalry charges made them a popular spectacle at military displays. It was the Lumiere brothers who first captured a charge on film by placing the camera directly in front. The horses pass either side of the cameraman but gave a sensational effect for a moment - as powerful as any train approaching the screen.

This fine example was taken by WKL Dickson in 1898 at Aldershot, where the Prince of Wales was reviewing troops. The film screened at the Palace Theatre on 25th April.
