        Big Glasgow Blaze

Tense scenes of a fierce fire and attempted rescue at a Glasgow railway goods station.

        Non-Fiction 1922 Silent

        Overview

One of the most terrible fires in Glasgow's history - killing five and causing an estimated £1million of damage - beset the North British Railway's nine-storey goods station, on the junction of High St. and Duke St., on the morning of 20 January 1922. Firemen took some three hours to bring the blaze under control - long enough for the newsreels (in this case, Topical Budget) to get their cameras to the scene.

These spectacular shots of fireman training their hoses at the smouldering building were shot by Topical Budget in challenging conditions for filming - with the smoke blocking out much of the light.
