        Overview

Film-maker Squadron Leader A.C. Ball founded the Nottingham wing of the Air Defence Cadet Corps in 1938. He subsequently took command of the Air Training Corps in Nottingham when it was created in 1941. Arthur Cyril Ball had been long associated with the air force, a former Royal Flying Corps pilot he spent several months as a prisoner of war in Germany after being shot down by ground artillery in February 1918.

Arthur Cyril Ball was the younger brother of Albert Ball whom, at the time of his death in May 1917, was the leading British air ace. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross and is remembered with a statue in the grounds of Nottingham Castle.
