A Thousand Year Old Custom

All the pomp and pride of the Isle of Man's annual Tynwald Day

Non-Fiction 1927 1 mins Silent

Overview

A wet July day isn't allowed to spoil the ceremony as the Isle of Man celebrates its national day, Tynwald Day, under the stern eye of Lieutenant Governor Sir Claude Hill. Each year on 5 July, the Manx parliament relocates from Douglas to Tynwald Hill, its original home over 1,000 years ago. The august ceremony, nicely captured in this newsreel, involves the reading of the laws in both Manx and English before thousands of spectators.
