        A Hundred Years Old

The wide-ranging wartime activities of the YMCA are highlighted by an American serviceman.

Government sponsored film 1944 11 mins

        Overview

A Hundred Years Old was made to persuade an American audience of the value of the Young Men’s Christian Association - and no doubt to encourage their financial support too. YMCA centres in the UK - supporting British and US servicemen - are shown in some unexpected spots, from remote airfields to Waterloo Station. They offer healthy leisure activities and plentiful cups of tea, and sometimes accommodation too.

The film was produced by Gaumont-British Instructional, a prolific and pioneering production company making short education films for schools, which found its livelihood severely disrupted by the outbreak of war. It found an alternative outlet in making films to support the war effort for the Ministry of Information, the armed forces and the British Council.
