Unavailable for many years, the once lost finale of Argento’s so-called Animal Trilogy is a thrilling hint of things to come.

With its audacious visuals and crazy plot devices, Argento’s tale of a musician who accidentally kills his stalker, only to be stalked by a witness to the murder, is a stepping stone between the relative realism of his early work and the irresistible weirdness that followed. Notable for featuring a gay private eye, this was the first of several Argento films whose queer characters, while sometimes stereotypical, were not depicted as villains or predators.
