A mysterious young woman finds refuge with a stranger in Chabrol’s unsettling psychological drama based on the book by Georges Simenon.
Betty (Marie Trintignant) is drunk and in shock when the older Laure (Stéphane Audran) finds her in a bar, Le Trou (‘The Hole’). Over the next few days, as the two women grow closer, Betty begins to recount fragments of her past through a series of flashbacks, gradually revealing the events that brought her to Le Trou.
Adapted from Georges ‘Maigret’ Simenon’s novel of the same name, a writer who – like Chabrol – was drawn to complex, inscrutable characters whose motives resist easy judgement.
