The Phantom Light
Michael Powell’s gothic mystery of a haunted lighthouse where insanity thrives.
Director: Michael Powell
Overview
This gothic mystery was an early feature credit for director Michael Powell. The North Stack Lighthouse is on a lonely stretch of the Welsh coast. It has won the unenviable notoriety of having a ‘haunted’ light, leading to shipwrecks and lighthouse keepers driven insane. When a new keeper, Sam Higgins arrives, he laughs at the tales at first but then finds that not only has his light been put out, but a beacon on the cliff is luring a ship to its doom.
