Laurent Cantet’s final film, directed by longtime collaborator Robin Campillo, is a moving and nuanced exploration of class and budding sexuality.
Enzo (newcomer Eloy Puho), a teenager from a wealthy family, rejects his class expectations by dropping out of school and apprenticing as a builder. Feeling increasingly disconnected from his peers and clashing with his father over his decisions, he finds himself drawn to fellow builder Vlad, who is from Ukraine and struggling with his own issues.
Originally conceived by Laurent Cantet (writer-director of 2008 Palme d’Or winner The Class), who died from cancer before filming began, with directing duties being taken on by his longtime creative partner Robin Campillo. Driven by Pohu’s youthful energy, Enzo is a perfect blend of social concern and seductive sensuality moulded into shape by a pair of French filmmakers who had been working together since their student days. Please note that subtitles are not provided for some sections of Ukrainian dialogue. This is a deliberate creative choice made by Campillo.
