Cinema has always offered a form of escapism – quite literally in the case of these films, which offer many variations on the theme.
Ingrid Bergman and George Sanders play a couple who find a holiday could spell the end of their marriage in Voyage to Italy (1954) while pitch black comedy Sightseers (2012) sees an escape to the countryside in a caravan turn into a murder spree. Children also seek to escape their realities – a child runs off to Coney Island after believing he has killed his brother in Little Fugitive (1953), a film that inspired the French New Wave, while the imaginative child at the centre of Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) drifts into fantasy away from her life in the Louisiana bayou.
