Farida Pacha's transcendent observational documentary captures the gruelling work of salt harvesters in a Gujarati desert. Her camera follows the backbreaking work of a group families who sift through vast salt lakes in the periods between monsoons, only for the vista to be washed away again once the rain begins.
Eschewing traditional voiceovers, Swiss director Pacha presents this extraordinary spectacle of human toil as an entrancingly rhythmic act that ebbs and flows in organic harmony with the landscape. A beautifully crafted meditation on man’s intersection with the natural world, My Name Is Salt will appeal to fans of similarly studied visions like Le Quattro Volte, Sweetgrass and Into Great Silence.
