Sarah Gavron’s subtle and intelligent adaptation of Monica Ali’s acclaimed novel charts the experiences of a Bangladeshi woman in London.
Director: Sarah Gavron
Overview
Sarah Gavron’s subtle and intelligent adaptation of Monica Ali’s acclaimed novel charts the experiences of Nazneen (Tannishtha Chatterjee), a Bangladeshi woman in London, battling her desires for a younger man and to break free of her arranged marriage.
Working from a script by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Iron Lady) and Laura Jones (Angela's Ashes), Gavron crafts a sensitive and authentic portrait of a Bangladeshi community as it’s rocked by the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent heightening of racial tension. Robbie Ryan’s luxurious cinematography rounds off one of the key British-Asian films of recent years.
