Silent Sherlock: Three Classic Cases

PG rating

A major BFI restoration starring Eille Norwood as Sherlock Holmes in an adaptation of three classic Arthur Conan Doyle cases.

For decades, Sherlock Holmes fans worldwide have been waiting for the restoration of The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes series. Produced between 1921 and 1923, the collection is the last significant work in the Sherlock silent film canon to be restored. The hugely popular series, which ran for 45 episodes, was sanctioned by Arthur Conan Doyle, who thoroughly approved of Eille Norwood as Holmes.

This programme features a selection of three newly restored episodes: A Scandal in Bohemia, wherein Holmes falls for ‘the woman’; The Golden Pince-Nez, which features Holmes’ deductive powers at work, and The Final Problem, featuring the sinister Professor Moriarty. The episodes are accompanied by newly commissioned scores by Joanna MacGregor, Neil Brand and Joseph Havlat, recorded live at the Alexandra Palace Theatre.
