Overview

Jens Meurer’s bittersweet and empathetic portrait captures the Norfolk coastal town of Cromer as it prepares for its annual end-of-pier show in summer 2019. We meet the directors, the performers, the team pulling it together, and the people who flock to each show over the entire three-month season. All shot beautifully on 16mm film, Seaside Special is affectionate and funny filmmaking reflecting the eccentricities of classic English entertainment as the country stands on the precipice of leaving its European neighbours. As a love letter to classic English variety show, German director Meurer offers an outsider’s view on such British institutions and what proved to be a tumultuous period in recent British history. “People have been really divided, even right through families, but despite this they come together to put on a show”.
