Reflection

A Ukrainian prisoner of war exposed to extreme cruelty and trauma struggles to readjust to civilian life upon his release, in Valentyn Vasyanovych's bold and brutal drama.

Drama 2021 127 mins Not rated

Director: Valentyn Vasyanovych

Overview

Selected for the Venice International Film Festival, Reflection follows a Ukrainian surgeon, Serhiy, dealing with the horror of what he witnessed and experienced as a prisoner of war. Upon his return home, haunted by his memories, he struggles to readjust to normal civilian life and works on rebuilding his relationship with his teenage daughter and her mother. Set in 2014, when Russia invaded eastern Ukraine, Vasyanovych's beautifully composed frames contrast with the brutality of war and the disorientation of Serhiy's traumatised emotional state.

A companion piece to the director's earlier film about the Russian conflict, the Oscar-nominated Atlantis (2019), this powerful new work establishes Vasyanovych as the chief cinematic chronicler of Ukraine's battle for survival.
