Overview
No fewer than five directors (Richard Whorf, Busby Berkeley, Vincente Minnelli, Henry Koster and George Sidney) were involved in this song-driven biopic of Broadway composer Jerome Kern, which endured an ill-fated production but resulted in an enormously entertaining finished product. Vincente Minnelli shot Judy Garland's numbers first, before the linking narrative had even been established, to ensure her pregnancy wouldn't show by the time production proper began.
Jerome Kern himself was himself involved but died during production, what began as good-natured musicology became a touching tribute. It would be the first in a series of MGM biopics about Broadway's composers; followed by Words and Music (Rodgers and Hart, 1948), Three Little Words (Kalmar and Ruby, 1950), and Deep in My Heart (Sigmund Romberg, 1954).
